What makes a driveway hold up

The base needs enough depth and strength for the expected traffic. The surface needs a shape that sheds water, and the water needs somewhere to go once it reaches the edge. If one of those parts is missing, ongoing surface repairs may not solve the problem.

  • That depends on the largest vehicles using it, the length of the driveway, sight lines, passing points and the available space. It should be set out for the property rather than to a standard width without checking the site.

  • The existing material and construction can be assessed. An exact match will depend on the condition of the driveway and whether the same material is available.

  • That depends on the traffic, material, drainage and weather. Repeated loss of gravel or regular soft spots can indicate a problem below the surface.
